Two Easy Steps to Making Big Changes in Your Life

There are two very easy steps you can take to make big changes in your life. Show up and be present.

Show up and be present. It sounds so much easier than it is. When it comes to anything we want to do in life the simple act of showing up and getting started seems to cause a lot of us the biggest problem. We constantly make excuses. We can wait until Monday or next month or next year. Whether you want to lose weight, be a better parent/spouse or you want to change directions professionally the first step is always just showing up. Changes don’t happen just by showing up once though. You have to show up day after day after month after year.

Once you are there, step two is just as difficult. You have to be present. How often do we show up to something and we are just going through the motions? It’s very easy to glide through your life without ever realizing what is truly going on around you. If you want to make big changes in your life, it is imperative that you learn to be present. Being present allows you to appreciate the struggles just as much as you enjoy the triumphs. Being present encourages you to show up every day. The opposite of being present is ignorance. A blinding of your mind that simply serves as a distraction from what is real and true. These distractions to the present are available now more than ever. It is our duty to do our best to filter them out when we want to make big changes. These distractions are not always a bad thing. Ironically, you must make a present minded conscious decision on when to partake in such distractions and doing so will give you practice for the times when you are trying to filter them out.

The toughest poker players that I play against almost always have these two things in common. They constantly show up. Day after day they are putting in work. They are also present. They are adjusting on the fly and challenging me to do the same. It is hard to describe how difficult this is to do especially if you aren’t in the poker world. When you are showing up every day and playing thousands of hands a day it is very easy to slip out of the zone and start to “auto pilot”. I try to keep myself present and connected by doing my best to take notice of the other players and whether they seem to be present or not.

To be honest with you, I’m writing this post as my own way of showing up. I have repeatedly wanted to really push out a lot of high quality posts. I think that I have a lot of good things to share but inevitably I end up putting it off. I have dozens of half written posts saved in my drafts as well as many more thoroughly outlined in the notes app of my phone. I’ve used the desire to be “perfect” in my writing as a reason not to write but I’ve decided it’s time to push through that and show up. I intend to put out content here as much as possible and I would also like to start putting out some video content on YouTube soon. I think that my content can help anyone who is looking to improve their mental game. It is something that I am constantly working on and it is an endless pursuit. It’s time for me to show up and be present here.
